From the Director

Beauty & the Beast is one of my favorite shows that elite produces. It is probably our most ambitious show in some ways. We have taken a well loved and known story (especially the Disney version) and have made it something completely different than expected. The story of Beauty & the Beast poses the question of what true love is. Is it based on appearances and exterior behavior, or does it go beyond that to the inner being….to the heart? Our story does explore that aspect, but we also dig a little deeper to see what hate and manipulation can do to a person as well. A quote from Buddha gives insight to what our story explores: “An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than a wild beast; a wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind.”

Although our version of Beauty & the Beast will be different than anything you have read or experienced, there are still the amazing elements that we all love so much from the original story…redemption for someone who has lost all hope and impossible love that overcomes the worst of circumstances.

Cheri Costales has been writing scripts and directing shows for the elite Company for over fifteen years. Her writing mostly consists of derivative work, adapting stories to work for dance theatre: Mr. Mallard’s Magical Menagerie, The Picture of Dorian Gray, A Christmas Carol, Dracula, Peter Pan, The Scarlet Letter, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and The Jungle Book.  Her most recent work has included original scripts: Days of the Dead, The Shoe Room, and elite Kids Theatre Projects: The Problem With Fairies, Benny & the Supersquad, Around the World in 80 Days and How The West Was Really Won.
